Ombré Makeup

Make Ombre Makeup Work!

By Gracee Tolentino

Originally a French term for shadows, ombré has become a major beauty buzzword, describing everything multihued from dip-dyed hair, to gradient makeup, to polychromatic nails. Makeup-wise, we’ve seen several permutations of this look on and off the runway—but the best renditions we’ve seen were worn during the Fall 2012 shows of Jason Wu, Roberto Cavalli, Viktor & Rolf and Prabal Gurung.

Technically, you can use as many shades—and even contrasting colors—in ombré makeup. But if you want to take this look to work, you might be better off with no more than two tones that are, preferably, within the same color family. A well-done two-toned lip can give you the look of full, juicy lips, while perfectly shaded eyes can truly make your peepers stand out without being too dark and dramatic. To show us how we can make this runway-inspired look fit our busy work schedule, we have tapped DermStore staffer and makeup junkie, Thu, to break it down for us.

Ombré Eyes

  1. Prime your eyes with your favorite primer.
  2. Dust a neutral shadow base (either nude or champagne) over the entire lid, staying just below the brow bone.
  3. Pick any 2 shades of eye shadows from your palette, preferably one lighter and one darker shade from the same color family.
  4. Apply the lighter shade above the crease.
  5. Using the darker shade, trace a V shape at the outer edge of the eye, then smudge the color inward to blend.
  6. Line your upper lash line with a black liner and finish with a few coats of mascara.

Ombré Lips

  1. First, exfoliate your lips with a sugar scrub. Don't have a good sugar scrub? We're obsessed wtih Sara Happ's The Lip Scrub in Creme Brulee. You won't believe how amazing this stuff smells.
  2. Brush your foundation brush lightly over your lips to neutralize your lip color.
  3. Line your lip with the darker shade, like dark plum, and then fill the outer half of your lips with the same shade.
  4. Paint the inner half of your lips with a lighter lip shade, like a metallic pink shade.
  5. Top it off with a lip gloss.

Voila! Before you know it you've mastered one of beauty's biggest trends with just a few simple steps.
