Get The Look

  1. Blow your hair dry using your fingers to create volume and texture.
  2. Divide your hair into small triangular-shaped sections and spray them with hairspray. Beginning at the nape, wrap each section of hair around an extra-large U-pin in a figure-8 pattern. (Don't have any u-clips? Improvise by folding pieces of tinfoil into U-shapes. They'll conduct heat, which is coming in the next step, just the same.)
  3. Hold each section with a flat iron for 15-20 seconds to set the shape. Let the hair cool completely before releasing it, then use a wide-toothed comb to piece it out.
  4. Use a fine-toothed comb to tease the hair on the sides of the head—just leave some definition intact right about the forehead.
  5. Divide your hair into two sections, and tie each into a knot at the nape of your neck, tucking the ends and folding it toward the center of your head to create a twist. Secure it with bobby pins and mist it with hairspray. You're done!

Diffused Structure

MAC Cosmetics Senior Artist Fatima Thomas leveraged shimmery shadows in shades of copper, brown and tan to define the models eyes, albeit no eyeliner. "The look centers on a diffused application of color without any hard lines or contouring," she said. "It's all about very clean skin, with a focus on the eyes and lip." As for mascara, she didn't use any—but that's not to say she skipped defining the lashes altogether. "I just used a little liner on a fan brush and applied it to the roots of the lashes. The definition is very subtle, but it's there."

amazing Grace

Who knew Appalachia could channel so much chic? Inspired by Black Mountain College, a beatnik liberal arts school founded in 1930, Ann Yee's Fall 2013 collection showcased a unique style Aveda Global Styling Director Allen Ruiz described as "woodsy and idiosyncratic in print, with a dim romantic undercurrent." To make the concept pop, Ruiz created a look of "controlled chaos"—a full-bodied coif at once wild and restrained. "It's more Grace Coddington than Veronica Lake," he explained.
