Venexiana: Punk's Not Dead« back to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2013
When the Met Costume Institute announced the theme of this year’s spring exhibit (“Punk: Chaos to Couture”) a serious level of excitement was ignited in the blush offices. So when we saw the rockabilly-rolled updos and winged-to-the-ears cat eyes on the runway at Venexiana—set to tunes from the Buzzcocks, no less—you can image how quickly we fell in love. If ever there were an edgy way to wear formal eveningwear, this is it. When you apply your makeup, keep a classic esthetic in mind: Use a shadow primer, a neutral shadow, and a liquid liner to make an out-to-there cat eye. (If you’re really going for the drama and extending way out to your temples, be sure to use a setting powder to ensure it stays.) Finish with a with a glossy lip, and use your imagination when it comes to the hair. The 1950’s-style roll you see looks just as great when accompanied by a French twist as it does with the bottom half of the hair left down and curled with a curling iron. Whichever you choose, the roll is easiest achieved with hair that’s not squeaky-clean. Using a Mason Pearson Tail Comb, make an off-center part in the crown section of your hair. Grab a panel that’s two inches deep and stretches to your opposite ear, spray it with flexible-hold hairspray for manageability, and carefully roll it down to your head, securing the bottom with bobby pins. Finish with more hairspray and you’re literally set to go.
