Going Green with Green TeaAccording to legend, tea was first enjoyed in China over 5,000 years ago. The early Chinese emperor Shen Nong, a scientist, patron of the arts and accomplished ruler, decreed that all drinking water should be boiled to promote better health and hygiene. One day while traveling with his court, Shen Nong stopped to rest. As ruled, the servants began boiling water for the wary travelers to drink. Dried leaves from the surrounding brushes fell into the boiling water, creating an amber liquid. The curious emperor decided to try the liquid, and was surprised at its refreshing nature. Little did Shen Nong know, tea would become a staple of many cultures, and enjoyed in many different forms for centuries to come.In addition to tea being a well-known, much-loved beverage, it has become increasingly popular in skin care and cosmetic products. White, red, black and green teas are all widely used in the skin care industry to treat many different ailments. But, because of its multi-use nature and proven effectiveness, green tea has snagged itself the number one spot. Best known for its anti-acne and antioxidant benefits, green tea has been shown to be as effective at treating acne as benzoyl peroxide. Plus, unlike benzoyl peroxide, green tea will not dry or irritate skin, and it provides exceptional anti-bacterial, anti-inflammation and detoxification properties. Found in all camellia sinensis-derived teas, EGCG, a polyphenol, revives dying skin cells. When applied, the EGCG causes the old cells to reproduce and release more energy, resulting in a fresher complexion. Also found in tea is vitamin B2, or riboflavin. Vitamin B2 creates a more resilient complexion, prevents the skin from peeling and beautifies. Following a green tea-based regimen is ideal for those who suffer from acne, rosacea and other conditions that result in sensitive, devitalized skin. Here’s a quick look at a daily green tea regimen for the entire body from start to finish. Cleanse the body with Pampered Pregnancy Body Wash by Belli Cosmetics. Ideal for all skin types – pregnant or not – this wash provides safe, all-natural cleansing and healthy dose of pure green tea extract. Cleanse the face with Bioelements Flash Foam Cleanser, a rich, velvety cleanser that gently controls oil, removes debris and refines pores. Then, tone the face with Perfect Finish Toner by Neova. Available in a variety of delicate scents, Zents Lotion supplies luxurious moisture to rejuvenate and plump skin. Hydrate the face with Nuxe Pairs Crème Fraîche, a rich combination of plant milks, essential oils and green tea. Then, apply an eye cream, such as Nourishing Eye Cream by DDF. Not only will its rich texture hydrate and nourish, this luxurious eye cream prevents the formation of fine lines and wrinkles for younger-looking skin. Also, don’t forget sunscreen! Blue Lizard Face Suncream protects against harmful UVA and UVB rays with a non-greasy formula. After the day is through, remove eye makeup with Herbal Eye Make-Up Remover by Eminence Organics. Completely natural, this gentle eye makeup remover cleanses away all traces of makeup, leaving the eye area soft and pure. Cleanse the face with your Flash Foam Cleanser, and finish with a rich nighttime moisturizer, such as DermaNew Replenishing Night Crème. Thirsty? Try Dr. Brandt’s Anti-Oxidant Water Booster in Lemon Green Tea, Pomegranate Green Tea or Pure Green Tea. These concentrated mixtures drop right into your water, giving it a boost of nutritious flavor. Plus, by enhancing the sometimes boring flavor of water, you’ll find yourself drinking more than usual, increasing the hydration level of your skin. Before bed, drink a hot cup of freshly brewed, pure green tea. In addition to its healthy skin-promoting benefits, green tea aids in digestion, and even increases metabolism! It is also believed that green tea boosts the immune system, reduces your risk of cancer, increases mental alertness, lowers stress hormone levels and inhibits the bacterium that causes bad breath. Don’t add milk or sugar, though – they will neutralize the beneficial aspects of your cup of tea. After reviewing its numerous benefits, it’s no wonder green tea has become so popular in the skin care industry. Whether it’s in your facial cleanser, eye makeup remover or mug, green tea naturally and efficiently improves the appearance and health of your skin, body and mind. Article posted 10/22/2007.
