Rosacea

Do you suffer from redness, flushing, breakouts and/or a stinging or burning sensation? If you answered yes to any of these symptoms you could quite possibly be suffering from a skin condition known as rosacea. Rosacea is an extremely common disorder of the skin but is often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. Many people that suffer from rosacea live their lives not knowing why they suffer from these symptoms and without the knowledge that they have rosacea. Others are aware of the condition but are uneducated about the disorder and choose not to treat it, or treat it incorrectly.

Rosacea is a widespread ailment with an estimated “13 million Americans who endure this disorder”. Those experiencing this condition will notice one or more of the following indicators – persistent facial redness, also known as erythema. This redness will typically be found on the forehead, cheeks and nose area. However, the redness can exist on all areas of the face and even spread to the neck and chest. Acne like breakouts are often associated with rosacea including papules and pustules. With both of these symptoms combined it is very likely the person will notice slight swelling as well. Visible blood vessels, also known as dilated capillaries generally become present with rosacea as well as irritated or watery eyes as a result of the condition and symptoms. Although these symptoms are obvious and clearly define a need to seek consultation with a physician, in fact "78 percent of Americans have no knowledge they have this condition" , including how to treat or recognize it. Rosacea symptoms can vary greatly from one person to the next but will always include one or more of these warning signs.

The main indications of rosacea have been discussed. There is however additional signs one may note while experiencing rosacea. Potential signs include but are not limited to dryness, rough texture of the skin, itching, feelings of tightness plaques (raised red patches) and thickening of the skin. This thickening or enlargement of the skin is usually seen on the nose. Enlargement of the nose associated with rosacea is known as rhinophyma and occurs with males patients more so then with females.

Rosacea can affect people of all ethnicities, but is commonly found in fair-skinned individuals such as Caucasians and Celtic or Scandinavian origin. Those suffering from rosacea typically find it occurs in their 30s but can occur at any age and even in children. The disease is more frequently seen in women but is also found in male patients. Male patients often experience more severe symptoms than women which is why it is extremely important to seek medical attention if you think you may have rosacea.

Is there a cure for rosacea? The answer is no there isn’t a cure for rosacea. The cause of rosacea is currently unknown. Research and studies of the disease has been done for years without defining an actual or definite cause. Potential causes or theories have evolved with these studies and research of the disorder. Some rosacea specialists say the cause is due to microscopic skin mites called the Demodex mite and an increase of these mites on the skin. Others say hereditary factors play a role in rosacea and who develops it. Other studies point out neurological disorders combined with internal bacteria results in rosacea. Almost all these causes have information and studies to back them up but again all have been inconclusive thus resulting in an unknown cause which means an unknown cure for the disease.

Just because we do not know a cause does not mean we cannot treat the disorder, we can with the right regimen. Consultation with a physician is always recommended but appropriate home care is also highly recommended. Murad’s Soothing Gel Cleanser and Recovery Treatment Gel have proven to be especially helpful for numerous rosacea patients. These products feature a cocktail of ingredients to effectively relieve rosacea including goji berry, lactic acid, allantoin, sodium PCA and a blend of botanicals and extracts. Not only do these products treat the symptoms of rosacea they also strengthen the skin and the injured blood vessels to assist in preventing these symptoms. Dryness, tightness and itching is soothed and hydrated for an evident look of clarity and calmness. In addition to a topical regimen, rosacea should be treated with daily supplements. Supplements complete a home care routine by internally treating skin concerns. CosMedix Desensitize reduces and calms redness and hypersensitivity while addressing allergies and providing the body with essential antioxidants.
