Hard water and the skin
The Effects of Hard Water on the Skin
In today's world, taking care of our skin has become second nature. Products such as cleansers, moisturizers and toner help keep our skin healthy, vibrant and youthful. They also are commonly used with something else that is commonplace in every washroom – tap water. But tap water might actually be working against your skin and your skin care products, speeding the formation of skin damage, discoloration and wrinkles.
Renowned Manhattan Dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross, founder of the MD Skincare line of products, discovered that impurities in tap water, such as iron, copper, magnesium, lead and zinc, can act as free radicals. Free radicals bond with healthy skin cells and immediately begin destroying them, setting off a chain reaction of cell destruction. This chain reaction can lead to the breakdown of collagen, cause redness and irritation, enlarge the appearance of pores and lead to the formation of fine lines, wrinkles or even acne.
Tap water contains heavy metals such as iron, copper, magnesium, lead and zinc. These elements build up on the skin’s surface and can block the flow of natural oils through the pores. This can contribute to many dermatologic issues including breakouts, acne, rosacea and inflammation. It also affects the body's cooling system, sweat, leading to increased blood flow and increased body temperatures during times of activity, according to the National Institute of Health.
“While the water is clearly drinkable, if you are unlucky enough to be exposed to bad water on a regular basis your skin can suffer the same kind of damage, although to a lesser degree, as sitting in the sun with suboptimal protection,” says Dr. Gross.
To combat these impurities, MD Skincare created the breakthrough Hydra-Pure line of products, which uses the revolutionary Hydra-Pure Chelating Complex. This complex is the first of its kind to use chelators (pronounced key-lay-tors), an organic complex that engulfs and sequesters free radicals on the surface of the skin and prevents them from causing damage and wrinkles. These chelators actually pull heavy metals right off the surface of the skin, letting your complexion breathe. However, chelators still allow the absorption of those metals that are beneficial to the healthy functioning of the skin, and they increase the effectiveness of your other daily skin care products.
MD Skincare’s Hydra-Pure Intense Moisture Cream won the prestigious 2005 WWD Beauty Biz Award for Breakthrough Product of the Year. In addition to the unique chelator complex, this cream contains essential oils and powerful humectants, which promote collagen production and leave the skin with a healthy dewy finish.
The newest products in the Hydra-Pure collection are Hydra-Pure Oil Free Moisture and Hydra-Pure Mist. In addition to providing all of the benefits of the Intense Moisture Cream, the luxurious, lightweight Oil Free Moisture’s dual mechanism provides both immediate and long-term moisture.
The Hydra-Pure Mist is a portable, refreshing mist that allows you to treat and refresh your skin anywhere and at anytime. Dr. Gross explains, “Your skin loses moisture throughout the day. Hydra-Pure Mist brings that moisture back while amplifying the effects of Hydra-Pure Intense Moisture Cream and Hydra-Pure Oil-Free Moisture.”
Other skin care companies have also recognized the need to combat the harsh effects that tap water can have on the skin. Decleor Relaxing Shower & Bath Gel combats the impurities that bombard our skin as we bathe. It simultaneously offers deep cleansing benefits as well as nourishing with Basil Grapefruit, Thyme, Sandalwood and Cedarwood. This natural blend also creates a wonderfully aromatic experience.
Guinot Tropic Tonic is a similar energizing shower gel with mango and passionfruit extracts, designed to protect the skin from the harsh chemicals in bathwater. Its exquisite formula not only keeps the skin clean, it naturally helps protect against signs of aging.
