Rash Decisions: Recognizing and Treating RashesRed, itchy, bumpy, scaly skin; it doesn’t sound like fun, and it’s not! No matter how your skin appears, if you have any of these symptoms, you have a rash. Rashes are extremely common and they occur for a wide variety of reasons. Rashes can be frustrating for the sufferer because diagnosis of the cause of the rash and proper treatment can be difficult. In the mean time, you must suffer with an unsightly, often itchy and uncomfortable skin rash.Rosacea is a very common type of skin disorder that is very often referred to as a rash. Rosacea is the general redness over the nose, checks, forehead and chin of the sufferer. For some people, the redness turns to red pimples, and pus-filled bumps may also occur. The bumps and pimples may be itchy, further contributing to the discomfort of the sufferer. It is not known what causes rosacea, however it does seem to affect fair-skinned individuals more frequently, and those people who blush easily. It generally affects women more often than men; when men get rosacea, it often affects them primarily in the nose area. Rosacea Care is an entire line of skin care products that have been designed for the unique needs of people who suffer from rosacea. Included in this line of skin care products is a soothing spray, moisturizing lotion with SPF, eye cream, soothing gel, cleanser and an entire line of concealers and makeup to cover up the redness. Another very common type of rash that almost all babies suffer from at one time or another is a diaper rash. Diaper rashes are very common in infants because of the moisture that is held in close proximity to the skin. There are few different options for diaper rashes. The best one is to use a barrier cream or ointment that keeps the moisture away from the skin. Mustela Vitamin Barrier Cream forms a protective barrier against the skin while at the same time soothing and calming babies’ skin, keeping it soft and healthy. Using ingredients such as zinc and shea butter, this barrier cream can soothe any existing rash while preventing future irritation. Another common rash that often affects children but can extend into adulthood is eczema. Eczema is characterized by itchy, red, flaky and raw skin. Often the skin forms liquid-filled bubbles that will burst and create an even itchier rash. Eczema can be made worse by cold, dry winter weather or chemical irritants, as well as by itching. A product such as SBR Lipocream creates a barrier from water and other irritants coming into contact with the affected rash while fortifying the skin to build up the natural barrier of the skin, improving the general condition of the area. Just because you do not have rosacea or eczema or suffer from diaper rash anymore does not mean that you are immune to experiencing the discomfort of rashes. In fact, most of the population will experience some form of rash at some point in their lives due to contact irritants. Irritant contact dermatitis is a rash that develops because your skin has come into contact with something that has created a reaction. The most common example of this type of rash is an allergic reaction. For example, if you have a nickel allergy and are exposed to nickel in the form of a ring on your finger or the button on your jeans, your skin will become red, puffy, scaly and maybe even crusty in that area. Another very common contact irritant is poison ivy or poison oak. The skin will become extremely itchy, red and puffy in the exposed area. In order to avoid a poison ivy rash altogether, you can use a product such as Ivy Block, which has been designed to prevent the irritating oils from the plant from coming into contact with your skin, preventing the rash from occurring at all. These rashes will go away on their own after time, however there are a few things that you can do to ease the itching, and help the redness and swelling to diminish. Using a cream or lotion that contains hydrocortisone will help decrease the itchiness and bring down the redness. A product such as Oak-n-Ivy CortiCool or Bioelements Immediate Comfort 1% Hydrocortisone Lotion uses 1% hydrocortisone to control the itching while providing a barrier as well as a cooling action to help make the area feel better. There are many different types of rashes that will occur for a wide variety of reasons and the important thing to remember when you suffer from any rash is to determine the source of the irritant. It is important to keep in mind that many things may cause a rash, and it is important to consult your dermatologist regarding treatment options. If you are experiencing an allergic reaction to a medicine or food, it is important to receive medical attention. However if the rash is of a milder nature there are many skin care products available to help you treat the area and bring you relief. Article posted 4/09/2007.
