With its innovative and intelligent approach to anti-aging skin care, This Works brand philosophy starts simple enough: nothing beats sleep when it comes to keeping your skin healthy and beautiful. Founder Kathy Phillips is responsible for creating an expansive skin care line that aligns with the body’s biorhythms, offering sleep remedies, morning energizers, stress relievers along with face and body solutions. As a global health and beauty expert, Kathy takes results seriously and ensures that the brand delivers on its promise. She honors and proudly displays this commitment the best way she knows how—through the brand’s name. Here, Kathy lets us in on how working for Vogue has paved the way to her own beauty empire.
Kathy Phillips: The concept of This Works came while I was working as a beauty director at Vogue. During this time I was lucky enough to see just about every beauty launch out there and yet I found myself using products made for me locally by an aromatherapist.
I was frustrated with the marketing of brands who didn’t (in my opinion) take into account what women really need and want, often using focus groups and—I’m being sexist here—men in marketing to decide on the products they made. Also, making promises I didn’t feel their products delivered.
In addition, I was interested in the use of bioactive natural products, plants and herbal medicine since I started practicing yoga, now over 35 years ago. The lifestyle of a yogi is not just about the postures, but the philosophy urges clean living and a gentler, more holistic way of looking after your mind and body.
I’m sure much the same as all entrepreneurs—having to work on a budget and therefore having to compromise on design, componentry and packaging. Also, having to strategize in a business-like way about the creation of products, as opposed to letting my creativity have free reign!
How did I overcome them? I had to learn to be less emotional about what I consider to be the best end-product. I’ve learned that what excites me most may not necessarily be the most commercial choice.
Well, obviously, I believe that the best beauty secret is a good night’s sleep. I also advise people to invest in a good cleanser. Many people will buy a cheap cleanser and spend their money on a moisturizer. That’s the wrong way around. If you strip your skin and disrupt its pH balance with a cheap cleanser full of harsh surfactants, you are setting yourself up for problem reactions as soon as you add a moisturizer, foundation or SPF. A gentle balm cleanser without sulfates will give you the best canvas to work with.

Considering that our legs are one of our most exposed body parts, they endure a lot of sun damage, dirt and pollution. And whether they’re exposed or not, it’s still important to keep them looking smooth, toned and healthy. This specially developed serum perfects, repairs and enhances legs by evening out skin tone, diminishing the appearance of scars and discoloration and improving skin structure.
One of the tenets of beauty and skin care is to never sleep with makeup on, but we’ve all had those days when the call of our bed is stronger than our skin’s pleas. This cleansing pad is made for those moments of weakness as well as days on-the-go. This product features the brand’s Bio Boost complex, a potent mix of plant oils that allows the pads to effectively rejuvenate skin and rid it of dirt (thanks to rosewater and mint) while maintaining moisture and keeping its pH balance.
