    Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is caused by exposure to ultra-violet radiation from the sun, thus increasing melanin production. Ranging in color from light brown to black, hyperpigmentation usually appears in the areas most often exposed to the sun: the hands, face, shoulders and arms.

As we age, the skin begins to lose its ability to repair itself after harmful sun exposure, resulting is the splotches of melanin (color) characteristic of hyperpigmentation. In the vast majority of cases, hyperpigmentation poses no threat and no treatment is necessary, although in a very small number of cases, they have been known to appear in correlation with skin cancer. However, hyperpigmentation can be unsightly and removed for cosmetic reasons. This can be done by cryotherapy (freeze therapy) or laser treatment as well as with cosmetic products that lighten the skin and restore a uniform complexion.
