Eczema
Eczema is a form of inflammation of the upper layers of the skin common among infants and the elderly, although it can affect anyone. While there are many types of and causes for eczema, all are characterized by redness, itching and dryness, with possible crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing or bleeding.
An important step in relieving eczema is to bar any contact with drying or irritating elements, including most soaps, which remove natural oils from the skin. Keeping the affecting areas properly moisturized is essential. Emollients are available in both cream and ointment form. Since creams have a higher water content, they are easily absorbed, making frequent application a must. Ointments, on the other hand, stay on the skin longer, but should be applied more sparingly to avoid stickiness.
