Hyperkeratosis

Keratin is a protective protein that found in all animals that, along with collagen and elastin, is responsible for strengthening the skin. Hyperkeratosis is caused when too much keratin is present, resulting in a thickened, scaly, rough spot on the skin.

Hyperkeratosis is often a natural reaction by the skin to rubbing, pressure and other forms of local irritation, and causes calluses and corns on hands and feet or whitish areas inside the mouth. It can occur as a response to chronic inflammation, infection, irritating chemicals or the ultra-violet radiation from the sun, or as a part of an existing skin condition, such as eczema.

There are a number of treatments available for hyperkeratosis, most of which soften the afflicated areas by breaking down the keratin.
