L’Occitane was born in 1976, founded by Olivier Baussan, who utilized century old distillation techniques and methods to extract the essences from blooms and herbs. Baussan envisioned L’Occitane by combining his desire to maintain French Perfumery traditions with his respect for nature, life and the environment. Baussan gathered Frances’ regions most subtle fragrances unified with natural ingredients to develop L’Occitane’s very first products-based on essential oils extracted from Frances’ local plants. Baussan dreamed of learning new possibilities for his distinctive line, in keeping with Olivier Baussans' dream, L’Occitane developed products using natural ingredients from all over the world.
L'Occitane focuses on different philosophies; L’Occitane was created out of respect for the environment, animals, people and tradition. Because Baussan has this mentality he has gained global partnerships supporting his philosophies. L’Occitane despises animal cruelty, in turn has signed the International Charter Against Animal Testing. L’Occitane uses recycled or recyclable material for their packaging. They feature Braille on their packaging, as well as operates a partnership with the women of Burkina Faso in Central America, who harvest the fruit from the Shea tree to provide L’Occitane Shea butter. This harvest is the women’s legacy and their assurance and security of financial independence.
