SPF

SPF is the sun protection factor of a sunscreen, which generally ranges between 2 and 50. The higher the SPF value, the more protection your skin has from damaging UVA and UVB rays. For instance, an SPF value of 2 through 11 gives minimal protection, SPF 12 through 29 gives moderate protection, and an SPF of 30 or higher provides the highest. These numbers represent how long you should be able to stay in the sun without burning. In other words, if you’re using a sunscreen with an SPF of 15, you should be able to stay in the sun fifteen times longer without burning, than if you did not use SPF 15 sunscreen at all.

It’s important to remember that most of us don’t use as much sunscreen as in the manufacturer lab tests that determine the SPF ratings. So the SPF number should only be used as a general guide. If you’re planning to remain in the sun for an extended length of time, make sure to reapply your sunscreen several times throughout the day.
