Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic Dermatitis is a skin disorder that affects the scalp, face, shoulders and trunk, causing scaly, flaky, itchy or red skin. It affects men and women of all ages. Dandruff is caused by Seborrheic Dermatitis, as is cradle cap in infants.

While the exact cause is not known, it may be caused by a fungus. A natural response in individuals with decreased skin immunity and increased sebum production sheds large scales of skin in an attempt to remove the fungus.

Depending on the individual and affected areas, a number of treatments are available for Seborrheic Dermatitis. Specialized shampoos are ideal for removing the dead skin before it builds up into flakes, while vitamins, especially B Complex vitamins, may help address the underlying skin sensitivity.
