Tarte Cosmetics was founded in 1999 by self-professed beauty junkie Maureen Kelly. Frustrated by the inferior formulations, packaging and usability of the cosmetics at her local makeup counter, Kelly set out to make the line of cosmetics she wished existed: one that was free of synthetic ingredients, were actually good for the skin, and actually looked cool.
