| Question |
| Hi. I am a 28 yo female who has had acne almost half my life now. I have it on my face, upper arms, back and legs. After doing some online research, I have come across several websites that claim that acne can be caused by food allergies, like dairy and gluten. Then some websites contradict that claim, saying acne doesn't have anything to do with your diet. Well, I don't know why I have acne but I do know that I eat a lot of dairy and wheat. Also, I have very oily skin that is also dry as well. So, these are my questions: Can acne be cause by food allergies? Should I see a dermatologist about my acne? How can a naturopathic doctor help my acne if at all? How can I reduce the oil? What are some good supplements for acne and healthy skin overall? Thanks a bunch! |

| In my opinion and based on my research acne is not caused by food allergies. Typical food allergy reactions or responses are bloating of the stomach, diarrhoea, loss in energy or becoming tired, headaches, itching in the mouth or skin, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, etc. Keep in mind though food allergies can result in skin rashes, but these do not typically appear as acne or acneic breakouts. As you mentioned there is controversy or contradictions surrounding this topic. The above is just my opinion, you will receive different responses from different sources. If you have been experiencing acne for half of your life, then I would likely recommend you seek consultation from a dermatologist. It's possible a naturopathic physician may be able to assist you with your concerns - unfortunately I personally can't tell you what types of treatments they would recommend, as every physician is different. I can only say the obvious, that they will suggest natural remedy's such as herbs and lifestyle changes. Sebum reduction can be obtained topically and/or orally. Topical treatments to reduce oil include vitamin A products, azelaic acid and salicylic acid as well as prescription products. Oral treatments include vitamin A such as Accutane. For acneic issues I prefer to recommend the CosMedix product line. From this line I suggest you consider CosMedix Purity Clean. Spot treating is very beneficial, as you are targeting problem areas. Consider CosMedix Clarity Serum to spot treat. For day and night moisture consider CosMedix Phytoclear. The acne issues should also be treated with daily supplements such as CosMedix Clarity Supplement. Best skin care wishes.
