Non-inflamed Clogged Pores | | | Skin around the side creases of my skin, and now my chin too, has a problem. Every day these pores not only fill, but overfill--creating white "buttons" or tags sitting off the surface of the skin. They are clogged, obviously, but not in the traditional sense. They are not inflamed at all, and are definitely not whiteheads or blackheads. I can take my tweezers, grip the little top, and simply slide it out. SO gross! It pulls out a long piece of sebum or whatever, like a pore strip would normally do...except mine fill up and then have a iceberg tip on TOP of the skin! So not only are my pores clogged, they actually overfill and leave white dots! On my chin, they are like a million tiny little flaps. I cannot take a hour to pull these out every day! But they are noticeable! I am 32, did not break out too bad as a teen, and now, the older I get, the MORE I am breaking out. And that is in addition to the nose/chin thing, I wash my face every day, and I've tried every cleanser under the sun. WHY does my skin do this? I have oily skin, and it seems to be getting oiler, and yet areas are dry --it seems oil "underneath" and dry on top at the same time. Help me! -- I've never read anything about those things before! |

Facial Skin Care Regime | | | Hello-
I am 32 with a 14-month old and noticed quite a bit of aging around the eyes within the last two years. Also, my pregnancy related malasma was almost gone but came back with a vengeance while nursing. I have tried researching which skin care regime would be best for normal skin at my age and get confusing suggestions (AHA, Retionl, Kinetin, etc.). 1. Which would you recommend I use (thus far I cleanse with Cetaphil, Eucerin SPF 30 for moisture, & an occasional mask)?
2. What % of zinc oxide and titanium dioxice is necessary or which sunblock would you recommend?
3. Would a prescription bleaching cream from a derm., chemical peel, or laser be the best for the malasma that will probably never go away on its own?
Thank you so much for your time. I am sorry about all of the questions but I have needed help for quite some time without getting the proper assistance from the derm. Thank You! |

Skincare Regimen | | | I am 37, have Asian skin - medium toned, minimal breakouts, normal/combo skin (dry in winter, oily occasionally), few wrinkles and fine lines, face could use some tightening. Any facials I have gotten, the tech always says my skin looks great for my age.
I am looking for a good day and night regimen for my skin. I am concerned with anti-aging and wrinkles. I currently use a mish mash of different lines, some pricey (LaMer for eye cream), some cheap (Dove's face wash). I am looking for a long term skincare regimen/line that has multiple products to take care of my daily day and night routines.
Recommendations on the full regimen would be appreciated along with the order in which to use these products and how often (daily, or weekly for exfoliation/masques). Thank you!

Question Regarding Jan Marini Skincare Line. | | | Hey,
I am 26 years old and I have oily acne prone skin. I would like to try Jan Marini skincare line in order to solve my acne and acne scarring problems, which includes C-Esta Serum Oil Control, Bioclear Lotion, Transformation Serum, Factor A Plus Lotion, Benzoyl Peroxide 5%, and Lightening Gel.
(1) are these products suitable for my skin? which products should I use?
(2) in which order should I use these products (regimens)?
if I use: (morning) C-Esta Serum Oil Control -> Bioclear Lotion -> Transformation Serum; (night) Lightening Gel -> Bioclear Lotion -> Factor A Plus Lotion -> Transformation Serum -> Benzoyl Peroxide 5%. am I using them right?
(3) what's the difference between transformation serum and transformation cream? which one is better for my oily acne prone skin? can I use the transformation serum as moisturizer?
(4) can I use the Bioclear Lotion as moisturizer?
(5) can I use the Bioclear Lotion and Factor A Plus Lotion together at night in order to treat acne and acne scarring?
(6) if Factor A Plus Lotion is good for me to use twice per week, do I need to use the Lightening Gel in order to treat discoloration?
(7) does the C-Esta Serum Oil Control need to be used morning and night? can I just use it in the morning?
Thank you very much. |

Product Recommendation | | | It will be appreciated if you could suggest products for me and my kids:
Me: I'm 40yrs old and although my skin is oily it still gets dry beneath the oily sheen. It is also very sensitive and reacts to a lot of products. I have blemishes, uneven skin tone and scarring.
Chi: My daughter is 13yrs with dry skin and suffers from acne on her forehead and sometimes under her lip. She sometimes has scaling around her nose creases. She recently started developing a few blemished on her back
Ody: My 16yr old son has normal to oily skin with acne usually on the forehead and sides of his face. Recently, he's started getting blemishes on chin and upper name area, and back.
Ari: He has oily skin that used to have acne but now he only gets one or two blemishes which appear to be due to razor bumps. He's currently 17yrs.
The kids currently use Paula's Choice products which appears to have helped them more than other products they have tried but has not completely cleared their acne. I currently use Elizabeth Arden products - the Time Capsule products and a few others that I don't react to.
I'm hoping to find a simple regime for the kids that will be easy for them to stick to.
Your assistance will be appreciated. |

Pregnancy-Induced Acne | | | Hi Megan,
My name is Amber. I'm a 30 year old Black woman and I just had a baby 2 weeks ago and I've had bad acne (bad for me, though not really bad in the public eye) the entire time, so much so that last week (postpartum) I saw my doctor because I was breaking out across my chest, shoulders, and upper back with pimple-like bumps. She gave me Benzoyl Peroxide 5% and Augmentin 875mg because she felt like the follicles were infected. I've been taking the antibiotics and using the Benzoyl Peroxide on my affected areas, including my face because I was breaking out there also, though not as bad. I've noticed a significant improvement in my skin, to my relief. My mother has been treating her dark spots with products from the La Roche-Posay line and I have to say that I am seriously impressed! Because I also use the wash (Benzoyl Peroxide) in the am, I needed a moisturizing sunscreen to use for the day, so I started using her Anthelios SX. Ok, so I gave you a little background.... Here is the question. Tonight I am buying Ceralip lip repair cream, Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel, Effaclar Toner Astringent Lotion, Anthelios SX, and Mela-D, all from the La Roche-Posay line. Now, I am still using the Benzoyl Peroxide 5%, should I continue using that, even though it is helping my skin, or should I switch and start using the Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel? I am buying it so that when I'm not using the Benzoyl Peroxide anymore, I can start using that. The Anthelios SX is absolutely awesome, so I can imagine what the other products are like and can't wait to try them, however if you think that I would see better results from just starting on the Effaclar, please let me know and I will stop the Benzoyl Peroxide. My other question is what order do I use all of the products in? Do I use the Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel first, then dry my face and use the Toner Astringent Lotion, then dry my face and use the Anthelios SX? When do I use the Mela-D and how often? Can I use Anthelios SX at night or is there something else I should be using at night? What can I use for my chest and shoulders and upper back? Is there some kind of acne wash for the body that I can use? Something from the same line, perhaps? Is there a body moisturizer, too? And can I use Mela-D on the dark spots on my chest and arms and back where the little pimples left dark spots? I know this is a lot of questions, but I REALLY appreciate your answering my questions!
Thanks,
Amber S |

Cystic Acne! Help! | | | Hi Meagan,I've suffered a lot from my sensitive, cystic acne skin for 3 years. I am Asian, 17 and live in Vancouver. I've spent a lot of money on Mario Badescu skin care products, Bye Bye Blemish drying lotion, natural acne cream, etc... after being recommended by people around me. I've taken different supplements prescribed by my family doctor. But none of them really worked for me even though they worked really well on my older sister who also had a really bad skin condition. I've had huge break out after any time I tried a new product or supplement, and even the cleansers. My skin problem took away all of my confidence, and especially after my sister got her smooth, soft skin back. I've got lots of stress just because of this. I got light cystic acne all over my face (compared to the pictures i found on google), black heads on my nose, chin, and also big pores on my cheek, and there's some acne on my back as well. My skin are oily and super sensitive. I really want to get my confidence back, live and enjoy my teenager life without being worried about people looking at my terrible skin. Please help me. Thanks Meagan. |

REGIMEN/ADVICE | | | I currently use Clarins one step cleanser w/ exfoliation, which I recently purchased. I use both in the AM and PM. For AM use, I use Aveeno SPF 15 Lotion, mixed in with a little 4% Hydroquinone Prescription bleaching cream. At night, after I wash, I mix Avon 10% Vitamin C serum with a little bit of the prescription bleaching cream. Sporadically, I might switch between the Aztec Clay Mask or 100% Dead Sea Mask. I later plan on incorporating a 55% lactic peel to use weekly.
I am currently 21 years old. I am African American with acne prone skin(cystic), they show up sporadically. My skin is combo/oily. I actually use to have pristine, glowing, poreless and impeccable skin. But by 19, I gradually would get minor breakouts here and there. I have went to an array of products to reclaim what my skin once was. My skin concerns would be to stop the sporadic breakouts, make my skin vibrant since it looks dull, and make my skin tone uniform in tone. Recently, I started breaking out regularly, I think maybe the Vitamin C serum is responsible for it. What products from ANY line would you suggest? If you look at my skin, it might not be that bad or average looking but it is significantly affecting my esteem significantly. I have an appoint with a derm, but I have to wait 3 months! I don't have severe acne, but I am thinking of trying Accutane? I already tried Proactive but it was too drying. I tried Murad but it just made my breakouts more erupted.Any suggestions would be grateful. Thanks for your time. |

Skin Issues! Not Sure What To Do. | | | I have the following skin issues and am desperate for something that works. My dermatologist has not spent adequate time (in my opinion) to diagnose and treat the problem.
Possible disorders:
1) Keratosis Pilaris
2) Gram Negative Folliculitus (From long term antibiotic usage)
3) Scalp Folliculitis
4) Intermittent Acne
Symptoms:
1) Raised white bumps with red inflammation covering upper arms, shoulders and sometimes on the forearms. A few of these are also on my thighs.
2) The white bumps oftentimes come to the surface like acne. When pinched, it is generally a hard white substance that comes out, rather than pus.
3) A similar substance comes out of white filled areas surrounding hair follicles on my face. This primarily occurs around my mouth and forehead; some rare occurrences on my cheeks. If I make my face taught, I can see the white bumps and if pressure is applied it comes out fairly easily. About 1/10th of these turn into red, acne like bumps that last a few days and are very inflamed. The remainder of the bumps go away after the white substance is pinched out.
4) On the back of my scalp and in certain areas elsewhere on the scalp, I have red bumps, sometimes with the same hard white substance in them. Very mild itching occurs sometimes. They are bright red and raised bumps.
Past treatment:
1) Past treatments were initially started to improve the appearance of acne on the face and back. Arms were perfectly clear until June 2008.
2) Treatments included both topical and oral medications.
a. Accutane
b. Doxycycline
c. Monocycline
d. Retin A
e. Tazorac
f. Differin
g. Benzoyl Peroxide and BP Cleansers
3) After my initial course of Accutane, my skin was very clear. Acne on my face and back was negligible and it remained this way for months. About 7 months after completing the Accutane, I started to develop the white bumps on my arms. I went back to the dermatologist and he suggested another course of accutane, which I did. This didn’t help and now about 6 months after that course of Accutane, I have more bumps than ever. I explained that I thought the bumps were something other than acne, and possibly Keratosis Pilaris or a form of Folliculitis. That was my last prescription.
4) I have used an AHA lotion (MD Forte Golycolic 20%) on my arms, although it does not seem to make a difference in any way.
5) I have been taking a skin supplement for one month (Murad Pure Skin Clarifying Dietary Supplement), and have not noticed an improvement in any skin problems. |

Skin Irritation/inflammation | | | Hello, I am a 22 year old desperate girl that just graduated and landed on a job at Seoul, South Korea. Before I lived in San Diego, California. In San Diego, my skin was extremely dry (weather is dry) and now I come to korea (VERY humid and pollution is very bad), and the dermatologist categorized me as Combination skin. Because of location changes, i had huge break outs, and so i visited 2 dermatologists here in Korea and they both prescribed me on Roaccutane and made me change all my skin care products to acne related products. Now my skin is clear but one downside was that my skin in San Diego, was extremely sensitive. For about less than a year i suffered from minor bumps (no redness, but just little bumps) that only effected my mouth area (chin, around my mouth, under my nose) Now it got worse. the bumps swell more, and now not only are the bumps major red, but the area around the bumps became red too. So one of the dermatologist prescribed me Cutivate Cream, and it worked for awhile, but now i feel like the redness and inflammation got worse. I dont get these breakouts quite often, (but they are starting to) i got them about... once a week or twice every 3 weeks, so i visited a 3rd dermatologist. Ithought it was food allergies, but he said it would have affected my whole body, not just a particular mouth area. (but to be honest, every time i eat, the mouth area gets very red, but gets to normal color after like...1-2 hours) He said several things, that it is because of the harsh acne skin products that i have been using, and prescribed me some other skin product that he said is less harsh and strong as cutivate, but honestly its not doing any good to my skin and i think its worsening it. Then to answer my question, he said it might just be the mouth area because the way i brush my teeth (i do foam a lot when i brush) and a lot of other factors have caused my mouth area to be that affected rather than my whole face. He would not help me further, and instead asked me to pay 40 bucks for a stupid skin treatment that only was a mask and some water therapy (which did not help) and so again, i tried my last hope, cutivate cream and it cleared out a bit.(i know its addicting, and perhaps my redness is the cause of side effects from this cream. but out of desperation, its the only relief that causes it to go away for a short time) I also did my own measures of getting expensive facial use salt, and putting salt water to it, and surprisingly its lessening the size of the bumps. Do you have any idea what my skin problem is, why its only affecting a small portion of my face (mind you, its slowly spreading...but very slowly) is there any way to make it go away, and do you have any recommendations of products i can use? My dermatologist said dont go to saunas, or places that have hot steam, but to be honest, the last time i had this and i took a trip to the sauna, my face cleared completely. (but perhaps reusing my acne related skin care made my skin condition worsen and reappear) I am sorry this is long, but i feel i can no longer trust these dermatolotists here in korea. all they have is magnificient clinics, charge you money you cant afford for just one visit, and dont easily prescribe u products that work so you can come back again! your help will be really appreciated. Thank you so much |

Tips On Acne Scarring | | | What do you recommend for acne scars? I will be taking my last pill of doxycyline today, and I went to the dermatologist again and she prescribed tetracyline. Once I started taking dox, I had no breakouts, and still don't. I am also using MD Forte Cleanser III, Aclaro, and Tri-luma. I have been trying out some samples of Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion in a jar, and it works well too. What else do you recommend to speed up the process of getting rid of the acne scars? This is actually the second time I broke out, however it's only on my cheeks, they said its hormonal. The first time I was using Retin-A and this face mask called plexion, and aclaro (March 2005). Then after a year of continued use, I broke out again, and that's when the derm prescribed doxyclycline and tri-luma (May 2006), and then I went again the other day (July 17, 2006) and she prescribed tetracycline. So all I have to worry about now is working on the scars left behind. The first time I broke out it took a whole year for the scars to go away, and that is the time I broke out again. I don't want it to be another year, so that is why I am using different products to speed up the process. My derm was also the one who recommended MD Forte, and it works great.
Can you tell me if retin-a 0.1% is stronger than Affirm 0.6%? I know that exfoliation will help cell renewal, that is why I ask. Retin-a micro was no longer effective after a while, so I want to use something stronger than 0.1% If afirm is not stronger than retin-a, can you name a product that works better that I may try?
Also, I took doxycycline for about 2 months, 200 mg capsules, she prescribed to take 2 per day and I did. then when I got the refill, and I took only 1 a day, and I had no breakouts. This time she prescribed tetracyline at 500 mg capsules, and told me to take 1 per day, so it will last 4 months with the refills. (She meaing my derm). Is it likely that I will break out after I am finished with taking the tetracycline? She told me to make another appointment after I'm done, and she told me the same thing after I was done w/ doxyclycline and and that's when she prescribed tetracyline. I know the reason they do this is b/c my body gets immune to antibiotics, so the switched me over to another type. I asked her how long I would need to be on antibiotics, and she told me to make an appointment when I'm done w/ tetracycline. However I feel as though she gave me a vague answer cause she just wants me to come back so she gets the money. Every time I see her she only spends about 5 to 10 minutes w/ me and then she's out the door, is this normal procedure? I pay $50 to see her, as my insurance doesn't cover derm visits or prescriptions either, and I can't afford to keep going if I don't need to. She has cosmetic employees (MA's) who call us in, and make us wait in another room, and file our info. on a computer, and then they leave, and we wait alone again, and then the derm comes in. I just want to know if it is normally like this because I feel rushed every time I see my derm. I was not sure if I should switch or not.
Thank you Megan, or Craig for taking the time out to answer my questions. Megan, if you are unable to answer these questions will you please forward this to Dr. Craig, as I do really want to hear from a derm. And also if there is a delay, can you please send me an email and let me know when I may hear a response. I look forward to hearging what you have to say. Thank you again.

Isotrenton Vs Not. | | | Okay, I want to be a doctor, but I'm not one yet, (first yr of college coming soon). I get confused by all these warnings about Accutane. I know all medicines have side-effects and stuff, but Accutane is popular and causes birth defects and suicidal thoughts so it gets alot of attention when i search for it online. Even the I Pledge thing freaks me out. I'm a guy and I guess I'm not worried about the depression thing, maybe I should be, but I have no history so that's not a concern for me. I'm worried about this stuff like intestine problems? Like muscle and bone problems? Like problems wearing contacts during and after treatment... "AFTER", like a month after, or like forever??? I'm sure you can see my concern. I've got halfway wandering eyes (I can keep them straight but I'm conscious of it and if I got laser surgery and had one eye for close and one for far, it would drive me insane) so I'm not going to get laser surgery and I don't like glasses, so this is big. I also work out, and I guess I take back down on working out and use glasses for a half a year, but I don't want to get screwed up for my whole life just because I wanted to get rid of my pimples. I'm borderline even needing accutane I guess. I currently use (supposedly very good) Lytic Gel Cleanser by epionce (I don't use a towel, I rub on gently to face that I splashed with water so it foams, then I leave it on for about 5 minutes then put my face under the sink to wash it off). Then I let my face dry and apply Clindamycin Phosphate topical solution, USP Pledget 1%. I do this about 5/7 days a week. 2/7 days I use lytic gel and .05% (tazarotene) Tazorac. I would double up, but my face dries out too much if I overuse tazorac. It would be possible to also use Clindamycin on my tazorac days however. I also use minocycline 50MG everyday, 2 in the morning and 1 at night (very consistent). I work 35-40 hours at a pizza place that is about 90-105 degrees at my station near the oven and there is grease in the air, I can tell because it accumulates on the walls and when I come home, my face is gross, not just sweat, it's greasy. I immediately use lytic gel. I will be cutting down to about 15 hours a week when I go to school in less than a month. Maybe this will help my acne? Will it? And could I increse the dosage or medication itself that I mentioned without using accutane? Would accutane be more of a risk than what I'm using now, or what I would be using, should there be something more powerful I could be using now without using accutane? I know you can't predict how I will react to a medication, but I need help. I need advice. Also, I'm 18, both of my parents had acne, and my fathers was almost gone at my age and my mothers was. I know that guys have acne longer than women, what is the average age when it cools down? I'm 145 lbs and 5' 8" and am not growing right now. Oh yeah, and just to reemphasize, I really don't want to mess up my muscles and bones, especially if I'm suppose to grow some more. I'd really like to grow more if possible, heh. I don't want to screw myself by taking accutane, but I also don't want to be scared of some stuff that's not really an issue, or is unlikely enough that I should go for it. Do these people have problems because they don't get blood tests, or don't report symptoms? Like if I am aware of my body and get my blood tests every month, does that make me have much better chances to be okay? My doctor implied that they haven't had even minor problems with accutane. This is all very confusing, please help me. If my acne is going to town down in the next couple years anyway, I really don't know if accutane is the answer. To make my situation more clear, I have minor redness but a lot of small bumps and maybe 2 medium problems areas when I'm on my current medication, I look alright, but it's not like I don't have a noticeable acne problem. I have acne, just not super bad. The reason I'm considering accutane is because, It seems like this is as good as it's going to get, and my doctor told me that my acne will likely go completely away like cured if I take accutane for 5 months... It sounds like a sweet deal... I hope you can help me. I'm not really in much of a hurry, I just need to know in maybe the next couple of weeks. Thanks. |
