Melasma Regimen

Melasma is a condition characterized by increased pigmentation of the skin, such as dark, irregular shaped patches on the skin. Melasma is often referred to as chloasma or pregnancy mask. This condition is most commonly found on pregnant women, or women who are taking a form of birth control or hormone replacement therapy. Melasma is generally found on the cheeks, nose, lips, upper lip and the forehead. Melasma can be avoided by applying a broad spectrum sunscreen every day; however, even if melasma is acquired, it can be treated. There are topical treatments that are used to reduce melasma discoloration, such as hydroquinone, either in a prescription form or over the counter. Azelaic acid and tretinoin are also commonly used to treat this condition. The following regimen is an excellent start to reducing melasma. Remember that all products used during pregnancy should be approved by your physician before use.
