Dermatologist Review of NeoStrata

NeoStrata Company was founded in 1988 and is a pioneer in the development and promotion of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) in skin rejuvenation products. The founders, Dr. Van Scott from New York and Dr. Yu from Taiwan, spent twenty years together researching and developing AHA products prior to forming the NeoStrata Company.

As researched by Dr. Van Scott and Dr. Yu, AHA’s soften and refine the skin by penetrating the dermal layer and removing dead skin cells while maintaining the integrity of the healthy skin underneath. AHA’s help with a number of skin conditions, including wrinkles, acne, psoriasis and keratosis pilaris.

All NeoStrata products, generally speaking, are time-tested formulations that are recognized as beneficial and reputable. A few of my favorites from NeoStrata are the Facial Cleanser, AHA 8 Oily Skin Solution, Ultra Daytime Smoothing Cream SPF 15 and Bionic Face Cream. These four products make the foundation for a great skin care regimen for a large variety of skin types.

Today, NeoStrata creates products under the CoverBlend, Exuviance, Exuviance Professional, NeoCeuticals, NeoStrata and NeoStrata Professional brands. All of these products provide the anti-aging properties of AHA’s, including CoverBlend, Exuviance’s concealing treatment cosmetics.

These multiple NeoStrata brands overlap to some degree. The Professional line extensions of Exuviance and NeoStrata, in particular, are somewhat arbitrary product sub-groupings, although they are only available through dermatologists as they are stronger than other product offerings. The NeoStrata Professional products are essentially in-office peel formulations comprised of super high potency AHA’s.

There does not appear to be any clear rationale for the brand designations of NeoCeuticals and NeoStrata, although NeoCeuticals is a newer moniker and most of the NeoCeuticals products are more recent formulations. As such, we group the two brands together at DermStore.

Exuviance by NeoStrata is the first skin care line to offer polyhydroxy acid formulations for normal and sensitive skin types. The Exuviance product line represents a solid offering of milder AHA products. Exuviance is one of the few manufacturers to provide a range of AHA/SPF 15 offerings, including their Multi-Function Concealer SPF 15 and Fundamental Multi-Protective Day Fluid SPF 15, which is also fortified with antioxidants and botanicals. Some of the more interesting and popular products in the Exuviance line include SkinRise Morning Bionic Tonic and Evening Restorative Complex. The Bionic Tonic contains botanicals, marine botanicals, fruit, mint and tree extracts as well as buffered AHA’s and antioxidant vitamins in a refreshing alcohol-free tonic for use in the morning prior to SPF application. The Evening Restorative Complex is a nice blend of humectants, moisturizers, anti-oxidants and buffered AHA’s that works its magic during the sleep cycle. Exuviance has two very nice skin lightener gels as well. Essential Skin Lightener Gel is a very popular product with 2% hydroquinone and glycolic acid. My favorite Exuviance product is their Intense Lightening Complex, which contains 3% kojic acid, 5% lactobionic acid and 5% gluconolactone in addition to 2% hydroquinone. Intense Lightening Complex represents one of the very strongest non-prescription skin lighteners currently available.

CoverBlend by Exuviance is a very effective camouflaging makeup for the legs and body. The Leg and Body Makeup SPF 18 is very comparable to DermaBlend and incorporates AHA’s into the formula for multiple benefits.
