The Simple Steps of Moisturizing Explained (Since We’re All Probably Missing a Few)

BY Sam Pick · September 3, 2015

Although it can sometimes seem like a tedious step, our facial moisturizer is the one stalwart in our skin care routines. We may skip the retinol or toner from time to time, but no matter how much of a rush we’re in or how minimal of a look we’re going for, we can never skimp on our favorite moisturizer—applied morning and night, of course. With that being said we should know the correct way to apply our moisturizer, right?

There are a few specific steps for correctly applying a facial moisturizer, and chances are you’ve been skipping a few important ones. Changing the techniques with which you apply your moisturizer, the amount you use, and even which finger you use for application will maximize your moisturizer’s effectiveness and keep your skin in tip-top shape. It doesn’t matter if you’re shelling out for a high-end product or working on a budget: If you don’t apply it properly, it’s useless.

  1. Apply moisturizer twice a day, using one with a minimum of SPF 25  in the morning and one without in the evening.
  2. After washing your face, pat dry and apply serum to still-damp skin to lock in hydration.
  3. Follow with a dime-sized amount of moisturizer. [Graphic: Rule of Thumb: Apply products from thinnest to thickest.]
  4. Apply with your fingertips in gentle upward and outward motions starting at the chin.
  5. Gently tap in moisturizer with your ring finger around the delicate eye area.
  6. Finish with an eye cream or gel.
