Ever felt so busy that it seemed there wasn’t enough hours in the day to get everything done? If you’re a mother, this is probably what every day feels like. In between nursing, changing dirty diapers (if you’re still in pre-potty training stage), meal-prepping the next few days, chasing your little reckless wanderer and kissing away every minor boo-boo, there’s barely enough time to do anything else. And if you have a day job like 70% of moms in the US, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and let mommy guilt (yes, this is real!) get the better of you.
But those of us who have been blessed with little bundles of joy know this: there’s no better feeling in the world than taking care of your little ones. Here to share her experiences and insights on motherhood is Jessica Alba, actress, founder of the billion-dollar enterprise behind The Honest Company and Honest Beauty, and mother of two amazing daughters, Honor and Haven.
Jessica Alba: Never getting enough sleep and the non-stop worrying…ha! But seriously, almost everything. Being a mom is one of the most amazing things in life and I am so lucky to have such incredible girls.
In the bossy, pushy, speak out of turn kind of way. They are both really strong girls and I’m so proud to see how confident they are.
I don’t. I think achieving balance is impossible. The one piece of advice that I can give is to be present. When you’re at the office focus on work and when you’re at home focus on spending quality time with your family.
I think the trick is not being so hard on yourself. It’s impossible to be available for everyone and everything all the time. Instead, do your best to be present wherever you are so those moments get all of you. I’m also a huge advocate of keeping yourself recharged so you stay on top of your game. Whatever that is for you, whether it’s sleeping in, date night with the hubs, a massage or a girls’ night out (or girls’ night in—a glass of wine always does the trick!).
Be true to yourself. If you’re not true to yourself and what really drives your fulfillment and happiness, then you’ll always operate half-heartedly. Whatever it is that makes you fulfilled, whatever makes you the best you, is what you should focus on first. I believe kids can sense who you really are and your true self and they can pick up on your energy. They are the best lie detectors and they thrive when you are pursuing your dreams.
