Former Vegan Jordan Younger on What “Balanced Beauty” Means

BY Sam Pick · April 15, 2016

Jordan Younger is an L.A. blogger behind the revered wellness and lifestyle blog The Balanced Blonde, but that’s not the only thing she’s famous for. Two years ago, she transitioned away from being vegan—a move that shocked and even angered some of her followers. In her book Breaking Vegan, she chronicled her struggle with orthorexia, a self-destructive fixation with “clean” eating. “It’s time to advocate a lifestyle that doesn’t involve restriction, labeling or putting ourselves into a box. I am extremely passionate about eating ethically and eating whole, plant-based foods from the earth…but that doesn’t mean that living life in moderation is a sin. It’s a beautiful thing,” she wrote.

Today, she shares with her audience what it’s like to live “label-free” and the healthy, balanced lifestyle that ensues. Jordan has learned that balance, variety, label-free and radical honesty are the things she prefers in her own life and likes to share with people. During her recent visit to the DermStore studio, she discussed how this newfound lifestyle and self-love translate to what she puts on her skin. Shop Her Well-Balanced Beauty

1. Dry Shampoo

Her pick: Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk – Aerosol

What it is: An aerosol dry shampoo for all hair types.

Why she loves it: Dry shampoo is an absolute lifesaver for me because I like to stay out and about after I exercise, and I don’t always have time to run home and wash my hair. I love the smell and consistency of oat milk, and I love that this product has natural ingredients!

2. Facial Oil

Her pick: Eminence Facial Recovery Oil

What it is: A skin- correcting miracle serum for mature skin.

Why she loves it: This stuff is heavenly! It is so hydrating for your skin and was created with herbs and nourishing oils that are so soothing. Every time my skin needs a hydration boost I put this on.

3. Deep Cleanser

Her pick: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil.

What it is: A hydrating, skin-nourishing cleanser.

Why she loves it: We all need a go-to cleanser. As I’ve gotten older it has become so clear to me how important it is to be on top of washing my face. With such an active lifestyle, if I don’t wash my face right away I get the craziest breakouts. This stuff rocks and keeps me out of the blackhead zone.

4. Hair Mask

Her pick: Brigeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Conditioning Mask

What it is: A deep conditioning hair mask for restoring brittle and weak hair.

Why she loves it: The best for color-treated hair. I get my hair highlighted to keep that bright-blonde look, and without a deep-conditioning mask my hair would be dry and lack that shine factor.

5. Face Mask

Her pick: THIRSTYMUD Hydrating Treatment Masque

What it is: A nourishing face mask that delivers intense hydration to dry skin.

Why she loves it: Perfect for a girls’ night in, this product pulls out impurities with all-natural hydrating minerals! It also comes in the cutest bright-blue container that makes it the perfect gift to give to friends. Everyone loves a good mud mask, am I right?

6. Leave-In Conditioner

Her pick: Alterna CC Cream 10-in-1 Complete Correction Leave-In Hair Perfector

What it is: An advanced leave-in conditioning treatment for all hair types

Why she loves it: I would actually die without this product because my hair tends to get so broken and dry when I am overwashing and not using a leave-in product. So when you’re feeling like you need a boost of hair care indulgence, this is your product.
