How You Should Apply Retinol to Achieve Maximum Results

Whether it’s retin-a, retinoid or retinol, we can all agree that this vitamin A derivative is one of the most efficacious anti-aging ingredients on the market. However, application plays a big part in the effectiveness of retinol, because applying too much can have the opposite effect and actually cause more damage. For best results, here’s how you should apply your retinol product:

  1. Wash your face and apply eye cream.
  2. Wait a few minutes until your skin is completely dry. This is important, because if your skin is at all damp the retinol will be able to absorb more deeply into your skin and can actually cause damage. We want to apply moisturizers and serums to slightly damp skin, but never retinol.
  3. Take a pea-size amount of your retinol and, starting at your chin, apply with your fingertips in upward and outward motions.
  4. Wear sunscreen during the day to protect your skin.
