How to Build Your Anti-Aging Routine

It's natural to want to look younger after you get to a certain age. Wrinkles, blemishes and blotchy skin can add years to your appearance. But prevention and realistic expectations are the first steps in retaining vibrant, healthy skin. No anti-aging product will magically alter the way you look, but your regular skin care routine does have an impact. Learn what the building blocks of anti-aging can do for your complexion.

Moisturize Daily

Skin becomes thinner as you age and can make any wrinkles you have seem more prominent. That's why moisturizer — which makes it look softer and suppler — is one of the most effective anti-aging products available. Use it every day and be patient. Moisturizers can produce quicker results than other products.

Make Sunscreen a Habit

If you don't wear sunscreen, now is the time to start. Damage from the sun's powerful UV rays is a primary cause of aging skin, and it gets worse if you go to tanning beds, stay outside for long periods or expose large areas of your skin to the sun. Make it routine to put on sunscreen every day and to reapply if you're out for more than a couple of hours. Ideally, your sunscreen should be SPF 30 or higher, water resistant and broad spectrum. Some moisturizers also contain sunscreen but usually not enough to be worn alone.

Incorporate Antioxidants

Collagen is an elastic-like protein that helps keep skin looking young, plump and firm. As you get older, you lose collagen through a combination of natural aging and sunlight exposure. You'll never be able to prevent losing some collagen, but incorporating antioxidants such as idebenone into your skin care routine can actually increase collagen production and make a positive difference in reducing skin roughness as well as fine lines and wrinkles. And because antioxidants work better together, look for other potent antioxidants such as vitamin E and C, resveratrol and retinol to add to your routine.

Cleanse and Exfoliate

Dirt and dead skin cells can contribute to a blotchy skin tone or a rough, reptilian appearance. Both cleansing and exfoliating give the healthy skin cells a chance to shine through and are effective anti-aging steps well into your 60s and 70s. Use a gentle, mild cleanser, especially if you have sensitive skin and avoid aggressively scrubbing or rubbing the skin to clean it. Many people have a tendency to over-exfoliate, so be sure to observe how your skin reacts and pay attention to weather changes before you make it a daily practice.
