A quick glance at her Instagram page proves that Veronica Webb, fashion and beauty icon, does not age (seriously, this recent post is not a #TBT). And the timeless model, who rose to fame in the ’90s as one of the first African American supermodels to break barriers in the industry, is still very much a runway staple today.
But all of her time in front of the camera (you may have spotted her on the big screen in Jungle Fever), created a major light bulb moment that would inform her next career move. “Currently, in the blogging, fashion and beauty space, there has been a void for women over 40,” says Webb who launched webbonthefly.com to inspire those women. “We are the largest group holding the biggest buying power and I felt like it was time to talk and share relatable content,” she adds.
Here, the 53-year-old reveals her favorite anti-aging mask, how she finds time to stay in shape, and the beauty advice Bobbi Brown shared backstage at a fashion show.
Dermstore: You started a beauty and lifestyle site for women over 40, why is that project so important?
Veronica Webb: It is important for me to launch a platform that is inspiring, and filled with the secrets I’ve learned throughout my fashion and beauty career.
D: How do you find inspiration—and new content—for Webbonthefly.com?
I have to say my family, husband, team and everything that surrounds me, inspires me. People want you to be transparent and real, and I try to bring that essence every week on Webb On the Fly.
D: What beauty mistakes do women make that can actually age them?
I have to say it’s as simple as not drinking enough water. Water is everything!
D: How do you think beauty trends have shifted since you landed your first big cosmetics gig? And are they for the better?
I think many have come back, but yes many have changed. Right now, I’m loving the Peter Thomas Roth UnWrinkle 24 K Gold Intense Wrinkle Sheet Mask. They are amazing for anti-aging and hydrating the skin, especially with all of the makeup we wear at shoots.
D: Is there a piece of advice you’d like to give your 25-year-old-self?
Yes, follow your gut and focus on consistency. And always stay grateful.
D: We’ve seen you grace the pages of many magazines over the years, what was the best beauty secret you learned on set?
I learned that clean skin is pretty skin, and keeping it healthy is key.
D: Any great fashion or beauty hacks you’ve learned backstage at fashion shows?
Bobbi Brown gave me one tip: she said, “Only apply makeup where you need it.”
D: As a two-time marathon finisher, who only started training recently, why do you think it’s important that we follow our dreams at any age?
Of course it’s important to follow your dreams at any age—I would love to try out for the Senior Olympics and train. Age is really just a number.
D: And speaking of fitness, how do you find time to run (or workout) when you’re constantly on the go?
I make time. It’s hard but we have to find the time to take care of our temples. Or, I incorporate activities with my kids, where we are all active.
D: Are you good about wearing sunscreen while running outdoors?
Yes, you have to take care of your skin.
D: Do you have any other strategies for staying sun safe?
I wear hats—it gives us an excuse to make the current outfit more fashionable.
