- Q How did you get started in the hospitality industry?
- A I had an unconventional path to working in hospitality; I actually moved from Brazil to study biology thinking I would pursue a career in medicine. I took on a bartending job while in college to support myself — I didn't last long as a bartender, but I moved into a variety of hospitality roles and fell in love with the industry. Before long, I realized this was my passion and what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
- Q What does your beauty routine look like?
- A I keep it pretty simple in the mornings. I start off with a cleanser and make sure to wear SPF every day, especially since Montauk is so sunny in the summer. The EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrun SPF from Dermstore is one of my go-tos; it's lightweight and I often let it double as a moisturizer so I can skip a step and save time! I like to keep my makeup pretty light and natural, but usually will swipe on a cream blush and some mascara before I leave the house; I like to create the look of a summer glow as much as possible.
- Q What are your favorite beauty tips?
- A I'm a product junkie as much as the next person, but I think sometimes we forget that beauty starts from within. For me, staying hydrated is one of the biggest things I can do to improve how I look and feel - it's super important in the summer weather and hydrated skin is healthy skin!
- Q Do you have any summer beauty essentials?
- A I can't say it enough - sunscreen! I grew up getting a lot of sun exposure in Brazil and wish that I had been more diligent about this earlier in my life. I also love to carry a face mist at all times in the summers; I have combination skin but it really dries out in summer, so I'm constantly trying to keep my skin hydrated. I love the TULA Skincare Signature Glow Refreshing Brightening Face Mist for that; I can spray it on over my makeup as well which makes it perfect to use any time of day.
- Q What’s your earliest memory of skin care or beauty?
- A Honestly, my earliest memories are of spending days on the beach in Brazil chasing a sun-kissed, tanned look - something I would be much more careful about these days! Have I mentioned that sunscreen is non-negotiable for me now?
- Q What do you do for self-care?
- A I start my mornings with a 20-minute transcendental meditation; to me, self-care is mental as much as physical. My days get so busy between work and spending time with my son, so I find that meditation helps me get calm and centered for whatever is ahead. I've been practicing for years now — it's become a really important part of my daily routine and really a gift to myself. In a lot of ways I think it’s a gift to my work too…let’s just say you can tell if I miss a meditation session!
- Q What are your favorite products in the Dermstore x The Surf Lodge collection?
- A Given my background, I'm going to have to go with the Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream! In all seriousness, it smells delicious and is the perfect summer body moisturizer. I also love the ILIA Fullest Volumizing Mascara, which I actually discovered through Dermstore - I try to use clean beauty products as much as possible so that's a highlight of the collection for me and a product I'm excited to introduce to our guests.
- Q As a business owner, your time is limited; what are your favorite beauty indulgences?
- A Not surprisingly, my favorite beauty indulgences are ones that let me multitask and give me time back for other things - for example, I love to have someone come to The Surf Lodge to do my hair and makeup for me in the afternoon while I take calls or get the property ready for whatever we have going on that night. With a little help, I can look and feel my best and still make sure everything is getting done!
