Q Hi, My sister and I are suffering from exfoliative cheilitis. She is suffering for the past 6-7 years. I'm suffering for the last 7-8 months. In Exfoliative Cheilitis the lip skin grows and peels off. this process goes on and on. I underwent two surgeries. one a year back and the other 7 months back. One was nasal bone surgery and the other was liposuction. When my first surgery was done I my nose was filled with cotton for two days, because of which I hsd to take breath from my mouth. MY parents noticed reddish lips after my surgery that day. I thought It was just a lip dryness. THe lip would be dry then onwards every day. I strongly feel that sfter my first surgery, i have started to pick this problem. Could anesthesia be the cause for me? or the strong drugs that i took post surgery? What could possibly be the cause for my sister's condition? Please tell me ifthere is treatment for this? Regards
A

There are many possible causes of cheilitis. Because your symptoms showed up immediately after surgery I'd say there is a good reason to believe that it was caused by the anesthesia or the prescription drugs you took, but there is no way to be certain. I've also read that mercury teeth fillings can cause cheilitis, and removal of this type of filling could eliminate the symptoms of cheilitis. To my knowledge there is not a known cure, however there are products that help. I suggest you try exfoliating regularly with Pevonia Botanica Youthful Lip Retinol Serum as well as applying Dr. Dan's CortiBalm. Best skin care wishes. Meagan, Esthetician
