Q My dermatologist believes I have contact dermatitis. He told me not to exercise until the condition is gone. However, I have read that exercise actually helps even if it irritates the skin some. What are your thoughts on exercise and dermatitis? Thank you. Doug
A

It really depends on the type of CD you may have. The most common type of CD is irritant contact dermatitis. One thing that can trigger the symptoms of irritant CD are body fluids like sweat, saliva, urine. Exercise, as you know, will typically bring on sweating, possibly worsening your symptoms of CD. This reaction will usually be temporary. If the reaction is only temporary you will most likely be ok'd to exercise. If it does not then I would agree with your physician that limiting exercise for the time being is best. Best skin care wishes.
