Q Hi, I have been using Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant at 2-3 occasions during early pregnancy (first trimester). I just realized that it's not safe to use products containing salicylic acid when pregnant which makes me very worried. I understand that a product can be considered safe if it contains less than 2% salicylic acid, but as far as I have found searching the Internet, Gentle Cream Exfoliant contains 5%. I have also used Daily Microfoliant at a couple of occasions. Should I worry? Many thanks for you answers, Sofia

Hello

I received clarification from DermStore's Dermalogica representative in regard to your question...

The Gentle Cream Exfoliant does have a 5% salicylic acid, while the Daily Microfoliant has a 0.5% salicylic acid. Most the time you will not find over a 2% salicylic acid in a product. The FDA requires that a product intended to "treat acne" not be over a 2%, which is why products intended to treat acne will list the "Active Ingredient" and "Purpose" on its packaging.

To my knowledge the Gentle Cream Exfoliant does not contain a 5% salicylic acid, would you be able to reference the sources that stated this so I may look into it further. Additionally, salicylic acid is an ingredient that has mixed reviews as to whether it can or cannot be used during pregnancy. Most obstetricians will ok the use of this ingredient. I would however, consult with your personal doctor for approval. The Daily Microfoliant is another product that to my knowledge does not have more then a 2% salicylic acid.
