Q I'm a 24 year old female. After battling acne for all of my teenage years, trying every OTC and many a prescription antibiotic and topical treatment, I was finally put on accutane at 18 years old. It worked superbly, I had no adverse reactions, and my clear skin lasted for about 3 years. Acne started reoccurring so I went back on Accutane at 22 years old (for 3 months). Once again, no side effects, and clear skin for about a year. But now moderate acne has started coming back; 4-7 cystic pimples at a time around the mouth and on the chin. I really don't want to keep going on and off accutane the rest of my life! Any ideas on products that will keep my skin clear? Please help!
A

Acne around the mouth, as you may know is generally due to hormonal issues. I would suggest having some blood work done as well as other testing to make sure that there is not something more serious going on inside your body. Instead of going back on Accutane I recommend taking vitamin A supplements which you can find at your local health foods store for the acne. Akne Zyme is a great product to help treat acne internally. I also recommend using a regimen of products at home to help treat such as Obagi Clenziderm M.D. Acne Therapeutic System. You may also want to consider going on oral contraceptives such as Ortho Tri Cyclen. Best skin care wishes. Meagan, Esthetician
