As the days get shorter and temperatures begin to drop, it’s time to trade in those flirty frocks and flip-flops for cashmere sweaters and snug boots—all while sipping a steaming cup of your favorite seasonal latte, of course. But aside from switching out your go-to outfits, welcoming the fall season also means updating your makeup routine. Luckily, that doesn’t mean you’ll have to say goodbye to all your summer beauty staples. As it turns out, that bronzer you can’t imagine life without can make the transition from summer to fall. Curious how? Read on as we’ve rounded up the best fall makeup tips from beauty experts to help you go from beach babe to fall ready—without overhauling your makeup bag.
Colder weather means you won’t be sweating your makeup off just minutes after putting it on, so priming doesn’t seem all that necessary, right? Wrong! Priming will not only help your makeup last longer, it can also help smoothen and even out your complexion, so you won’t have to worry about large pores and cakey foundation. Not to mention, a good primer underneath also adds more dimension to your makeup and keeps it from looking flat!
Summer eye makeup is all about earthy tones with a dash of shimmer, but makeup artist and beauty blogger Hillary Kline says, “Using neutral and shimmery eyeshadows are pretty universal—no matter what the season.” In the fall, turn to your neutral palette for transitional shades to create a smooth and seamless smokey eye. Pair with a vampy lip and you’re ready to go!
You may be drawn to bolder, more dramatic looks in the fall, but there are days when spending more than five minutes on your makeup just isn’t possible. The solution? “Use a liquid liner to create a cat eye and then pair that with a berry lipstick,” says Kline. It’s quick and simple but “definitely screams fall.” Think of it as the autumn equivalent of summer’s “no makeup” look!
Some of us may have never survived our summers without a bronzer, but who knew it could be a fall must-have too? “Bronzer is still a go as long as you apply it on your E’s and 3’s—drawing on each side of the face, hitting the hairline, cheekbones and jawline—rather than over your entire face for a subtle sun-kissed look,” says Ashli Carnicelli, makeup artist and esthetician at Bella Santé Spa. It’s a great way to prolong that summer glow as you move along the season and begin to lose that tan you worked on all summer long!
Rich browns or sultry wines may rule fall lip trends, but don’t forget to make room for stains and balms. “I really love the ones that are moisturizing, especially with fall and winter approaching since my lips tend to get chapped pretty easily,” says Kline. Going for darker fall makeup, but don’t want to overdo it? Reach for a berry-toned stain instead of your usual burgundy tube!
Speaking of fall lip colors, corals and other peachy shades may look out of place during colder months, but Carnicelli has a way to make bright lips work in the fall. “Dial up the pigment by lining the lips first if you are going for orangey-reds.” Not only will this make your lip color look richer, it will also make your lipstick application smoother and more even!
Rosy or pink blushes make your skin look even more radiant and healthy in the summer and in the fall. They can help enhance your natural, just-pinched look that the cold, crisp air gives your cheeks. Just remember to swipe it on the right spots to complement your face shape!
If you think cloudy skies can shield you from the sun’s rays, think again. Regardless of when or where, sunscreen is the one thing that should never leave your makeup bag. “I always advise my clients to have a good sunscreen under their makeup, so depending on where you live, make sure the SPF you use is a level appropriate for you,” says certified esthetician Dayle Breault. “I like to use SPF 30 during the year as an overall base.” Breault also recommends reaching for natural, zinc-based sunscreens as these are often gentler on skin, but just as effective!
