When it comes to finding the best makeup products out there, there’s no better source than the people who use it all day, every day. We’re talking the pros—those who live and breathe makeup, like professional makeup artists and beauty bloggers. Their makeup recommendations are literally tried-and-true.
That’s exactly why there are few people better qualified to share makeup product suggestions. What foundation are they obsessed with? Is there a lip gloss they can’t live without? Which mascara do they use every single day? Keep reading to learn about the must-have makeup products the experts can’t get enough of right now.
Matte is having a moment. While they’ve gotten a bad rap for drying out lips, new formulas are making that a thing of the past. One in particular that’s changing the game: Tarte’s liquid lipsticks. “I’ve tried many long-wear liquid lipsticks, and this is one of the best because it’s matte without getting too dry,” explains New York-based makeup artist and beauty blogger Lauren O’Leary. “It has a matte finish, is comfortable and comes in a variety of beautiful shades.” She recommends lining your lips before you apply it for extra precision.
Palettes can be especially economical, since you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck in terms of finishes and shades. New York City makeup artist Abby Lauren is a fan of LORAC Eyeshadow Palettes. “They go on so smooth, are super-pigmented and blend like a dream,” she says. Plus, because the palettes offer both matte and shimmery finishes, you can create a million different looks with it.
When it comes to palettes, the formulas count as much as the range of eyeshadow colors. That’s why Nashville-based makeup artist Chelsea Reynolds uses it almost every day. “The shadows are super creamy and buttery and have minimal fallout”—meaning they wear longer—“and high pigmentation,” she says. The combination of matte and metallic shades in the palette gives her the flexibility to intensify an eye-makeup look for a special occasion.
If you carry a purse (so, all of us), you’ve probably logged serious time digging through it, searching for your keys, wallet or lipstick. (Or, on bad days, all three.) Jules Annen, a makeup artist in Minnesota, has a minor panic attack when she’s searching for this lip gloss—because it’s that important to her. “It’s shameless co-dependency,” she explains. “The application is smooth and hydrating, the colors are vibrant and inviting and the look is chic and fresh.” She loves it for her clients, but also wears it herself. That’s the mark of a must-have makeup product.
Foundation is one of those products that you use every day—and one for which good performance (like lasting all day and not caking) is essential. So you need a good formula, and this one delivers. “It’s great for oily, acne-prone skin,” says beauty blogger Hayley Paige. “It also covers up redness and makes your skin look flawless.” Not only does this foundation conceal imperfections like nobody’s business, but it also contains good-for-skin ingredients like amino acids and protective antioxidants.
If your makeup slides off your face before you get to lunch—due to sweat or oily skin—you could use a primer like this. “It’s made a huge difference in a great way,” says D.C.-based makeup artist Meaghan Robinson. The formula reduces the amount of excess oil on your skin and minimizes the look of pores for skin that stays smooth and matte all day.”
This shouldn’t be a surprise, since RMS Beauty is behind many must-have makeup products. The unique formula and sheer color means it flatters anyone and everyone. “The cream-gel texture mimics your skin’s natural finish without looking too sparkly or glittery,” says NYC makeup artist Ashleigh Ciucci. “It melts into the skin and creates a glow.” No wonder all the pros are fans.
Forget faux lashes. With this creamy, inky mascara, you won’t need them. “It’s the mascara that every woman needs in her makeup bag,” says makeup artist and beauty blogger Hope Chaney, who loves how the formula makes her lashes look longer and fuller. “As if it weren’t already the perfect mascara, it’s also cruelty-free.” Clearly, there’s not much it can’t do.
